Sport News today: Nigeria’s World Cup squad, Kelechi Iheanacho, ‘Happy camp’ Manchester United and more!

Gernot Rohr has said Ahmed Musa and Isaac Success can still make Nigeria’s World Cup squad if their fortunes improve over the coming months. The duo are in the midst of miserable campaigns at the club level, having failed to make a Premier League appearance – at Leicester City or Watford respectively – since the start of the season but the Nigeria manager is hopeful that something may just happen in the January transfer window.

Musa has started just once for the Foxes scoring in the League Cup victory over Sheffield United – while Success was barely considered during previous Hornets boss Marco Silva’s time as coach, making one brief cameo in the same competition.

Kelechi Iheanacho has missed a chance to move to Newcastle United after the Magpies moved for Daniel Sturridge. Iheanacho who has only started just two Premier League games since his £25million move from Manchester City in the summer is pushing for a move away from the Foxes.

Leicester boss Claude Puel may now be ready to let the 21-year-old get some game time, and whilst there are clubs from around Europe clamoring for his signature, Newcastle emerged as a genuine contender for his signature until the Sturridge deal was concluded.

In Other News,

Leeds United are close to agreeing on a deal to bring Carpi forward Jerry Mbakogu to Elland Road in the summer but head coach Thomas Christiansen has played down the prospect of more signings arriving before Wednesday’s transfer deadline. United are now looking to set up the purchase of Mbakogu valued at around £3.5m by Carpi – but do not intend to formally conclude the deal until the season finishes.

Italian club Carpi, where Mbakogu has scored six league goals in 18 appearances this term, are in the running for promotion from Serie B and are reluctant to lose him midway through their campaign.

On The International Scene,

Jose Mourinho said Manchester United are a “happy camp” after returning to winning ways following a disappointing run of results in December, buoyed by the signing of Alexis Sanchez.

After ending 2017 with three successive draws, Mourinho’s side, second in the Premier League, have won all five of their games since the turn of the year. Sanchez is set to make his first Premier League appearance for United against Tottenham at Wembley on Wednesday after his debut for the club in the FA Cup on Friday.

Inter captain Mauro Icardi added fuel to speculation that a €110 million move to Real Madrid could be close after posting the phrase “to say goodbye is to grow” on Instagram. The 24-year-old striker has been linked with a multi-million euro move to the reigning Spanish and European champions.

The Argentine has attracted Real’s interest after scoring 18 times in the league.

In Other News,

Barcelona’s Spain defender Gerard Pique has signed a contract extension until the year 2022 which will take him beyond his 35th birthday. Pique started out in Barca’s youth ranks before joining Manchester United in 2004 but returned to the Nou Camp four years later and has since played over 250 league games.

Pique has won three Champions League and six Liga titles plus five King’s Cup, five Spanish Super Cup, two European Super Cup and three Fifa Club World Cup trophies with Barca.

Finally in Golf,

A decade ago Tiger Woods would not have been happy to finish tied for 23rd at Torrey Pines, but after the injury woes he has endured in recent years, the former world No 1 could not have been more delighted with his latest performance. Finishing joint 23rd on Sunday out of a field of 156 in only his second start since the surgery, he proved that he is determined to make the comeback count.

Aged 42, Woods is unlikely to reach the dizzy heights he achieved in his 1997-2008 glory days, when he won 14 majors. But at the Farmers Insurance Open he showed a doubting audience his short game and creativity are still intact.
