Arc inspired Soumillon to European flat record

The record-breaking jockey Christophe Soumillon said on Tuesday the key to his 305 flat wins so far in 2017 was approaching every mount as if it were running for the Prix d’Arc de Triomphe. The charismatic 36-year-old Belgian who is retained by the Aga Khan has his 305 wins so far in 2017, a European record, from a colossal 1,620 races.

His tally beats the previous record set in 2016 by Pierre-Charles Boudot with 300. “I’ve been riding races at a crazy rate right from January 1st and focusing on French races,” Soumillon said. “I mounted each horse as if we were on a Prix d’Arc de Triomphe weekend,” Soumillon, who won the Arc on Dalakhani in 2003 and on Zarkava in 2008, told AFP.

“The 301st win was my finsest win because my whole family came to see it and share in my joy in what turned out to be a euphoric atmosphere,” Soumillon said about his four-timer at Lyon La Soie. The feat means Soumillon will clinch the Cravache d’Or, or French champion jockey, for a ninth time.
