12 housemates walked into Big Brother Naija house on the 22nd of January, 2017 and they were later joined by 2 housemates, Bassey and Debbie-Rise who made a dramatic entrance the following day.
As days went by and daily tasks were carried out, it was inevitable to notice some housemates who shone their way through among other contestants, equally gunning for the N25million cash prize and a SUV car; it is no gainsay that ThinTallTony was quite noticeable courtesy his height, complexion, hair and creativity.
ThinTallTony whose real names are Offiong Edet Anthony, hails from Akwa-Ibom state. I would like to categorize him as a man who wears many hats. He is a professional dancer/choreographer, who has gone on to represent Nigeria internationally as a professional dancer. Asides from being a choreographer, ThinTallTony is also OAP, actor, show host/MC and a voice-over artist. At age 36, he was the eldest in the Big Brother Naija House and he is quite intelligent as well.
At the initial stage, ThinTallTony was one contestant to watch out for, because he was quite friendly, humorous, witty and fun-loving. However, he began to have problems with the viewers when he told his fellow housemates he had no family members that he lost them all to death. He also denied being married several times frolicking with his co-housemates most especially Bisola and TBoss whom he had a huge crush on.
Bisola’s ‘love relationship’ with ThinTallTony was quite peculiar because at a point, he manipulated her into thinking the emotions she had for him was mutual. Bisola clearly had a ‘thing’ for ThinTallTony but she was oblivious of the fact that he was married because he denied it several times. One unforgettable instance was this conversation that ensued between Bisola and ThintallTony.
Bisola: “Tony, are you really single?”
ThinTallTony: “By the grace of God”.
However, ThinTallTony couldn’t win the N25million and the SUV he was gunning for as he was evicted from the show on Sunday, 19th March, 2017.
When he got out of the house, his first interview was with the host of the show, Ebuka. He then opened up on why he hid his marital status from his housemates.
According to him, he said; “People tend to look at you differently once you tell them you are married”. He further said that everything that went on between him, TBoss and most especially Bisola was just about the game and the N25m at stake, as he doesn’t feel anything for them.
Since ThinTallTony’s eviction, he has gone on several radio tours for interviews and he maintains that he had dreamt of being a part of the Big Brother House for 12 years and his denials of his family marriage were his strategies for wanting to win the game and he doesn’t regret doing so.
Clearly, TTT’s strategies blew up on his face because despite his lies, he still didn’t win or make it up to the final 3.
In my opinion, TTT was a strong contender in the house and his winning didn’t depend on him denying his family, his wife or his kids. Winning Big Brother Naija would have been a walkover for him because he was quite intelligent creative and fun. That would have made his fans consistently root for him. Taking the previous Big Brother Africa episodes, Tayo Faniran was the first runner up of Big Brother Hotshots, he had a girlfriend and in fact, it was during the show he heard the news of his girlfriend’s pregnancy. He was very emotional about it and looked forward to being the best dad to his child. That singular action catapulted him to being a strong contender in the house because his Nigerian brethren wouldn’t let him down!
It has been said that based on logistics, Africans are an emotional people, so it could be quite believable that people buy into emotions that are relatable to them especially things about family and marriage.
Furthermore, during the first season on Big Brother Africa, Richard was a married man, and that didn’t stop his dalliances with Tatiana and even Nigeria’s Ofunneka.
So, in my opinion, TTT’s strategy was quite unnecessary and his lies/cover-ups made him to be perceived as a traitor by most viewers especially the female folk.
However, we still await Bisola’s reaction when TTT’s true state is revealed to her when she leave the Big Brother House…
